How to print a driver's license front and back on one page

Open the ID copy tool, choose ID card, then take or choose a photo of the front of your license and one of the back. Check that the four corners line up, and both sides are placed at their real size, 3.37 × 2.13 in (85.6 × 54 mm), one above the other on a single Letter sheet. Click Export / print, then Print. The result looks like a photocopy, and you never had to measure or resize anything.

Rental applications, new-job paperwork, insurance claims and school forms often ask for exactly this kind of copy. There’s no separate driver’s license option because none is needed: U.S. and Canadian driver’s licenses, state IDs and the U.S. passport card are all the same standard size as a credit card.

Why it’s hard to do by hand

In Word or an image editor, the problem is size. A photo’s pixel count says nothing about how big the card really is, so once inserted it comes out too big or too small. You’d also have to trim away the countertop behind the card and straighten a photo taken at an angle. The other route, the copier at a library or print shop, means leaving your license on a shared machine.

Step by step

  1. Choose the type. ID card covers driver’s licenses, state IDs, Real ID cards and the passport card. Bank card is for debit and credit cards, same size. Passport is for the photo page of a passport book, printed at 4.92 × 3.46 in (125 × 88 mm).
  2. Front. Click Choose photo to use a picture you already have, or on a phone tap Take photo.
  3. Line up the corners. The tool finds the card’s edges. If it misses, drag the four handles onto the corners; a tilted photo is squared up into a clean rectangle.
  4. Back. Same again, or click Skip the back if only the front is needed.
  5. Export. Print right away, or download a PDF to email or upload.

The first time you use the camera or ID mode, the browser downloads a scanner component of about 10 MB. After that it’s quick.

Health insurance and membership cards are usually the same wallet size too. If yours measures about 3⅜ × 2⅛ in, choose ID card for it.

Photo tips

Printed at the wrong size?

Choose Actual size or 100% in the print dialog, not “Fit to page”. If the card still comes out off, print the printer calibration page and measure it with a ruler, then read why prints come out the wrong size.

Privacy and acceptance

Your photos are processed only in your browser and are never uploaded. When you’re finished, choose Clear from the ⋯ menu (under Settings on a phone) to delete everything saved in this browser too. Whether a printed copy of your ID is accepted, and whether they need both sides, is up to whoever is asking, so check their requirements first.

Try it now on the driver’s license and ID copy page.
